1G Turbocharger

This is the turbo on a 1G DSM. There are a couple of different turbos that come on the 1G’s from the factory. There is the larger, more common 14B turbo found on all of the 5sp DSM’s. And there is the smaller 13G turbo that came on all of the 90-94 Automatic DSM’s. The turbo in the above picture is actually an Evo III 16G turbo, but use the same exact compressor housing as the 14B.

 

14B Info

A 14B turbo is significantly larger than most factory turbos on other vehicles. For example, the 3000GT turbo’s are damn near small enough that you can put each one in your pocket. The 14B is the largest turbo available from the factory on our DSM’s. The 2G (95-99) DSM’s use a T25 turbo and flow less than a 14B and also less than the 13G.

The 14B AND the 13G, use a J-Pipe. The J-Pipe connects the intercooler piping to the turbo via a 2 bolt flange. Although I am a huge fan of the TD05 turbos, this is one thing I hate about them. The J-Pipe design sucks compared to a down firing turbo where the intercooler pipe clamps directly to the turbo. The J-Pipe flange is one of the most common leaks during a boost leak test. The flange is prone to leaking because there is a gasket in between the J-Pipe and the turbo. It is also common for the bolt holes to strip out of the turbo compressor, which won’t allow for a good seal.

13G Info

Again, the 13G turbo comes on the automatic 1G DSM’s from the factory. These are not very commonly used today because everyone swaps on the 14B or larger turbo. The 13G is also NOT a TD05, but instead is a TD04. The 13G turbo also uses a J-Pipe much like the 14B.
